Berkley braid knot ADVENTURE!

The Berkley braid knot test results?

It was asked on BBC Boards if I could test the Berkley braid knot to see if it was better than the palomar. It sounded like an easy thing to test. And then, I tried to tie the knot. This is one of those knots that twists upon itself as you pull it tight. You have to keep everything neat and tidy as it is tightened down. This proved very difficult for me. I had issues making this knot. It took a couple of hours to tie 30 of these knots for testing. 10 of them looked so bad that I didn’t even try to break them. 20 of them I did test and here is what I got. This is using the 65lb Big Game Braid.

Berkley braid knot:
1 33.47
2 37.02
3 37.93
4 38.35
5 31.41
6 48.47
7 40.38
8 47.35
9 45.22
10 38.19
11 47.11
12 38.06
13 38.81
14 42.6
15 35.55
16 41.16
17 32.69
18 18.54
19 39.42
20 39.47

Average 38.56
Min 18.54
Max 48.47
Std Dev 6.50

Palomar knot:
1 41.02
2 46.79
3 41.82
4 45.22
5 41.56
6 42.68

Average 43.18
Min 41.02
Max 46.79
Std Dev 2.10

The answer for me was no, The Berkley braid knot was not stronger than the palomar knot. You may be able to tie the knot better than me and get better results. This knot takes significantly more time to tie and gave me a lower average breaking force.

Thanks,
Tom Moorehouse

Tom, thanks for testing that. I’ve personally never found a knot I like better for braid than the palomar, but if you’re interested in trying another knot against the palomar, might I suggest the knot that J P DeRose calls the Improved Uni Knot? It seems very simple to tie and according to him the knot retains much more strength than the palomar (65% for palomar vs. 97% for the improved uni knot). He has a YouTube video where he talks about it and demonstrates how to tie it. Just an idea if you’re interested. Keep up the great work.

Hey Corey, Fortunately I don’t need the perfect clamp to do knot testing. I just may try this improved uni knot test while i’m figuring out the best clamp system. Thanks for the ideas.
